The following is not a definitive list, but an attempt to bring together the collective knowledge of a lot of Canary owners & breeders. It has been written specifically for a new owner of a Canary, being kept as a pet.

  • A clean hygienic cage and environment.
  • Space to fly.
  • Clean water.
  • A variety of different seeds.
  • Sunlight and fresh clean air.
  • Greens & Weeds Fruit & Veg.
  • Shell Grit.
  • Toe nails trimmed if too long.
  • Familiar surroundings.
  • Music.
  • A friend / companion, human or bird.
  • A bath as often as possible (weekly).
  • Perches that are clean and of various sizes.
  • Perches that sway and move.
  • A dirty cage.
  • A small confined cage, which provides no ability to fly and exercise.
  • Dirty water.
  • Plain Canary Seed without variety.
  • Insect spray, gas fumes, cigarette smoke, cooking fumes.
  • Excessive heat.
  • Full sun without shade.
  • Drafts.
  • Dirty or contaminated seed and food.
  • Rodents or Mice.
  • Cats.
  • Barking dogs.
  • Excessive noise.
  • Shocks & vibrations.
  • Savage birds in the same cage.
  • Savage wild birds (Butcher Bird etc).
